Shopping for Scooter Insurance

When looking at scooter insurance, be sure to compare price, coverage, benefits, and customer service.  These can vary wildly depending on the provider.  Scooter insurance costs are generally quite low, but some companies won’t offer the same quality customer service that traditional auto insurance customers will receive.   Don’t let them treat your poorly if the scooter is the only vehicle you have insured, shop around and find a better insurance provider.

The price of scooter insurance will depend on several factors:

  • Make/ Model/ Year of the scooter
  • Engine Size
  • Credit History
  • Driving Record
  • Coverage Options

Scooter Insurance Discounts

While researching scooter insurance, be sure to ask about discounts. Some insurance will offer discounts based on age, marital status, home ownership, and even GPA if you are a student. You may also be able to save money if you have other insurance with the same company, such as life insurance, home insurance or other vehicles on the policy. Be sure to shop around though, because you may find your current provider isn’t scooter friendly.

Other tips to get the lowest scooter insurance:

  • Safe driving. Having a clean driving record with no accidents and no violations of the law will help lower your rate.
  • Pay the bills on time and don’t let your coverage lapse. This ties back into keeping your credit history good, but be sure to pay the scooter insurance bill on time if you don’t want to see an immediate rise to the cost.  Keeping your coverage from lapsing is important too, they will likely raise your rates if you have a lapse of coverage.
  • Higher Deductible.  A higher deductible will keep your monthly rate lower.  The only time this will be a problem is if you have an accident.  In that case, you will end up having to spend more before you scooter insurance policy pays out.  You just need to weigh the benefits and costs of higher deductibles to see if it is right for you.
  • Scooter Safety Course.  Find a local motorcycle safety course to take.  It will likely make your scooter insurance rate drop and provide you with more info on how to ride safely.  This can also be done with regular auto insurance by taking a drivers education course.  It will be worth your time and money to take the class and be safer on the road.  The lower insurance cost is just an added benefit.
